Sayers and Lundgreen have made several images loosely based on the Lady of Shalott/Ophelia idea. Their intention is to critique, and bring a spirit of jouissance and irony to, the popular Victorian genre of representing women in various, sometimes terminal, stages of disempowerment and passivity.
Using double-exposure, some of these images integrate the two figures to reveal nuances of ageing, death and sexuality, and further extend Sayers and Lundgreen’s exploration of ‘doubling’ and ‘mirroring’ which is a primary focus of their collaborative work.
